The Shadow of the Single Life

After returning from the first quarter of my whirlwind tour, I had an interesting conversation with my sister Arielle about the shadow of the single life.
In most of my programs and courses, there are many single women and men who are waiting, yearning, and hungry for love. They protest that they are doing everything. They say they've tried it all. But when I confront them and ask them about their actual plan, what they've studied, what they know about creating a partner; when I ask them about their vision boards or what their everyday life would look like with a partner; when I ask them what their needs are in a relationship, more often than not, I hear a half-answer. I hear the hunger of somebody trying to get a need met or I hear somebody who is attached to the ego ideal of what it would be like to be in love or to have a partner to soothe their loneliness and be their companion. None of that is wrong at all. Thank god we have unmet needs and have that longing, or many people would never even look.
I had the privilege of watching my sister Arielle, who at 44 years old made a plan and stayed committed to that plan each and every day. I watched her feng shui her house, continuallly work on her vision board, create a mandala of love. I watched her open her heart and take on forgiveness, letting go of the relationships that hadn't worked or caused mistrust inside of her. I witnessed what somebody who is fully committed does and is willing to do to open up to having a lover, a companion, a soulmate, a partner, and a spouse.
So the shadow of the single life is a deep resignation, a belief that says "It can't really happen for me" or "It won't happen to me." The shadow of the single life is the shadow of too many relationships gone bad. The shadow of the single life is made up of mistrust or not feeling worthy, maybe because of body image issues ("If only I lose ten pounds..." or "When I get in shape then I'll be loveable.") The shadow of the single life will continue to loom over those who are looking for love unless they make a plan, explore what keeps them single, and step into certainty about the possibility of love.
So for those of you who are ready to break free from the shadow, get out of the prison of the past, and open up to the lover of your life, I suggest that for a guide and teacher, you take it from someone who did it so beautifully and has created one of the most divine marriages I've ever witnessed in my life. Let Arielle share her secrets with you in her fabulous new Soulmate Kit. This "soulmate-in-a-box" kit is jam-packed with DVDs, CDs and her best-selling book The Soulmate Secret. When I asked Arielle recently, "Does The Soulmate Secret really work?" (which, of course, I already knew the answer to), she flooded me with one extraordinary story after another. One of those stories could be yours.

Am I Walking My Talk?

I love how the universe works. It always blows my mind, makes me laugh, challenges my assumptions and, when I'm listening, delivers me to the next greatest place. Here's my story.

As many of you know, I'm leading a monthly program called Creating A Life You Love which many of you are a part of. When I began the program two months ago, I made the commitment that I too would reinvent myself and go to the next level in each and every area of my life.

The first month, we worked on our relationship with God -- a breeze for me. I love to pray. I love to meditate. I love to find where I'm faithless and work to regain my faith.

Then for the month of March, we took on falling in love with our bodies. I was so excited! I'm always challenged because I'm an over-worker. Most days, I work 14 to 16 hours. I love it and I wouldn't have it any other way. But my dear, sweet, little body often cries for my attention. So here I was, the leader of the program, ready to have a breakthrough.

My body gave me the first signal right before I was going to get on a plane to hang out with some of my friends. It was 11 in the morning and I found myself laying in my bed -- lifeless. I had just led The Shadow Process and the BreakThrough program intensive. My body was saying, "Stop. Go to sleep. Do nothing." But being the trooper I am, after half an hour of rest, I ordered a burger and fries, and twenty minutes later, I was ready to board the plane. As I landed in San Francisco, I could feel my fatigue, but it wasn't until I came home three days later that I started to experience the consequences of overriding the message that my body was sending me. To make a long story short, I got sick and stayed that way for two weeks -- there's still a hint of it in my voice.

So what did I learn? I learned that no matter what, I must listen. I learned that there's nothing more valuable than my sweet little body. I learned that although I can wind myself up and make myself go, which I've done for many years, there's nothing more sacred, holy and valuable than listening to the whispers and the cries of my physical body. I've recommitted. And I've taken on weight training as a result of my son grabbing the flab under my arms. Oh, how mean but how proud I'll feel giving a little extra attention to my body. So ultimately the program has worked yet again. With just one week before we shift our focus to the topic of money, my breakthrough has come.

As I head off on the next adventure, a trip to Turkey and then to New York, I close my eyes and ask, "What does my body need to feel nourished and revitalized?" I realize that I need to get my blankets and the softest travel pillows I can find and then I need to curl up to re-read my very dear friend Scott Blum's book Summer's Path . I loved Waiting for Autumn and I love this prequel. My body is yearning to be filled with the stories, the subtle messages, the heart-opening words and the spiritual nourishment that all of Scott Blum's work offers.

Your body work for this week is to see what you need to do this weekend to have your body transformation. If you want to give yourself a big nourishing hug, read Summer's Path this weekend with me, my friends and my students. If your holy self is ready, you might even win a summer retreat at Canyon Ranch if you order the book this week.

With love and blessings,
Debbie Ford

The Shadow Effect

T H E S H A D O W E F F E C T
A Journey from your darkest thought to your greatest dream.

The Shadow Effect is an emotionally-gripping, visually-compelling docudrama that reveals why suppressed emotions and unresolved internal conflicts leads to behavior that continually unseats politicians, destroys celebrity careers, destabilizes the economy and affects the lives of millions each year.

In this age of public humiliation and media meltdowns, the work of New York Times best selling author, Debbie Ford, continues to make headway as she exposes the opposing forces of both light and dark that compete for attention within every human being. In her film debut, The Shadow Effect, Ford presents the hidden power of “the Shadow” alongside some of today’s most provocative thinkers including Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, Mark Victor Hansen, James Van Praagh and others.

In this life-altering journey, individuals who have transcended child abuse, racism, the Holocaust, war, and wounded upbringings, share their remarkable stories. Meet those who have learned to face their terror, heal their wounds, and embrace their higher, heroic selves to overcome the shadow effect.

T H E S H A D O W E F F E C T I N T E R A C T I V E

To leave the viewer inspired and compelled to take an evolutionary leap, Ford has integrated some of her most successful and proven processes into a cutting-edge Special Interactive Edition of The Shadow Effect. Throughout the movie, Ford guides the viewer through eight exercises designed to reveal the shadow effect in their own lives and presents them with opportunities to transcend personal limitations.

Are You Giving Too Much?

There is an affliction quietly and insidiously affecting us that crosses all lines of age, gender and race. It began when we were young and learned that in order to fit in with our families we had to ignore our own needs, stay silent, follow along, and give away our power. As adults this syndrome continues to rob us of our ability to ask directly for what we need and want and drives us to violate ourselves and our own integrity. When we're in its grips, we contort ourselves to fit in, to belong, and to ensure our status as a "good person". In a moment of desperation and powerlessness, we forsake ourselves in order to avoid confrontation and the mere possibility of rejection.

This is the dis-ease of trying to be liked, being nice, seeking acceptance, and trying to please others as a strategy - as a way to feel safe in the world and worthy in our own skin. What is even more important to recognize is that seeking the approval of others is a way to avoid how deeply we disapprove of ourselves. The feared rejection of another is actually an outward reflection of how we have already rejected certain aspects of ourselves.

In all of the books I write and the trainings I lead, I encourage people to acknowledge the cost of their limiting beliefs and behaviors. When it comes to people-pleasing, the cost is so pervasive and damaging that I want to draw special attention to it this week. The moment we try to please another and abandon our own truth for theirs, we essentially hand our power to them, violate our own integrity, cut ourselves off from our inner wisdom, and - at least for a while - disconnect from our ability to love and nurture ourselves. [I know this so well, because I've done it a million times!] We may do this with our children, spouses, employers, friends and society at large. When being a "good girl" or a "good boy" becomes a way of life, we can be sure that exhaustion will accumulate, resentments will build, desperation and neediness will increase, and we'll travel deeper into the land of victim consciousness.

This week, look to see how you might engage in people-pleasing and contemplate what the cost is in your own life, especially in the area of your self-respect...all the while keeping in mind that transformation begins when you tell yourself the truth.

As you practice being completely straight with yourself, you will notice miracles unfolding in your communications with those around you.

Your Weekly Shadow Work

Take a moment to sit quietly, take a slow deep breath, and check in with yourself. Think of a relationship or situation in your life that is particularly challenging for you right now, and ask yourself the following question from The Right Questions as it applies to this situation:

Am I standing in my power, or am I trying to please another?

Take a few minutes to jot down whatever arises. For greater clarity on how people-pleasing may be undermining you in this situation, utilize the following additional questions:

(1) How am I giving up my power to this person or situation?

(2) What am I afraid of losing?

(3) What would I need to know in order to have the courage to be straight with this person or in this situation?

With love and blessings,

Debbie Ford

p.s. Come share with me on Facebook and Twitter how you do on your weekly shadow work.

Do You Have Body Image Issues?

Most of us have spent years tolerating our bodies, hating them for what they are or what they are not. We usually get up in the morning, look in the mirror and have something less than inspiring to say to ourselves about what we see. As we get older, we focus on our aches and our pains, our high cholesterol, or our potential health care issues. We try to subsidize ourselves with supplements and other health tips -- all in order to feel good about our bodies. But for most of us, as age catches up with us, as the resignation builds up after years of holding on to more weight than we want or feelings of shame around the way we look or feel, we lose sight of the possibility of having a stronger and healthier body year after year. We lose sight of loving our sexy bodies and being inspired by our glutes and our abs.

If you are ready to have a massive breakthrough in the area of your life called your body and your health, there is no better time than now. To create the body that you love, you must create a vision, and we are doing that this month in Creating A Life You Love. So join now http://tinyurl.com/y8mbxoy for a month or a year and enter the coupon code bodylove at checkout to get $9 off.
It's time to have a body you love.

Heart-Opening Wisdom

One of my great pleasures is to introduce you to my friends and colleagues who are making a profound difference in the world with their writings and teachings. I've been blessed to be connected to so many whose voices serve as a catalyst to broaden our perspectives and open us up to new ways of thinking and living. Right now, I am reading three amazing books that I thought I would pass along to you since reading encodes our consciousness and allows new realities to emerge.

Gregg Braden, a dear friend of mine, is a visionary in bridging science and spirituality. His book Fractal Time, just out in paperback, has literally blown my mind open. Gregg takes the modern discoveries of nature's patterns (fractals) and the ancient view of a cyclic universe and illustrates how by looking in the past, we can know what to expect in the present and the future in everything from war and peace between nations to the patterns of human relationships. He uses this concept to illustrate the choice points in our lives where we can select a new outcome for returning patterns. Explore this totally fascinating and necessary book here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1401920659?ie=UTF8&tag=debbiefcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1401920659
Judith Orloff's book Second Sight takes us on her journey from an intuitive child, alone with confusing abilities, to an esteemed psychiatrist who comes out of the "intuitive closet" to defy medical taboos. I love how this book balances her own story with empowering and practical techniques to awaken our own intuitive powers to transform our health and our lives. Judith is a great resource in the areas of intuition, energy medicine and spirituality, and she is a fabulous guide beyond the limitations of our intellects and into uncharted realities. Learn more about her book here: http://www.drjudithorloff.com/second-sight-promotion/
And finally, I've been curling up at night with a sweet book from DailyOM co-founder Madisyn Taylor called Learning to Live. Madisyn's book weaves together award-winning inspirational thoughts with Madisyn's piercingly honest story. She wrote the book to serve as a guardian angel for people who are learning to live life fully, a task worthy of our attention. Get the first 45 pages for free and much more here: http://www.dailyom.com/book/ltldl.html
In a day when so many people have given up reading books, I can promise that reading books will have a long-term benefit to your health and well-being as well as to your level hope and inspiration. Books take you on a journey unlike a quick email message or a television fix. So read until you can't read anymore. Put the books near your bed and allow the wisdom that has been gathered for you to be your guide into an inspiring future.
With love and blessings,
Debbie Ford

A Love Ritual

You can either live your life as though nothing is a miracle or as though everything is a miracle. - Albert Einstein

Most of us spend our days waiting for a future that is not here yet. We hunger for the moment when all of our external desires will come to fruition so that our "perfect life" can begin. Day after day, we strive for more better and different, looking at what is lacking instead of what is working. We complain about the inconveniences of everyday life, whether it be our bodies, our bank accounts, our government, our families, our partners or lack of one, and on and on. Seeing through a distorted lens that says "It shouldn't be this way," we have forgotten that we are a bit blind, overcome by the trance of the modern age.

But this week myself, many of my coaches and other community members had the profound privilege to spend half an hour listening to a miracle , Dr. Edith Eva Eger, a Holocaust survivor and one of the courageous stars in The Shadow Effect movie. She literally lifted us out of the circumstances of our lives into the holy vibration where miracles exist. All she had to do was share the lens through which she views the world, not like some new age optimist but as a survivor of one of the worst atrocities that any human has endured. During that ordeal, Edie choose to stay focused on the miracle of each moment and to take control of the only thing that she had -- her mind.

Edie stood where most people have feared to go. More often than not, the fear that we have controls our minds. We fear that we will fail, that we will be wrong or that our dreams won't be a reality. And our fear wins out over the miracle of faith. We focus on our flaws, our weaknesses, and the one person who has broken our heart rather than forge tirelessly into the next moment with gusto and strength. We all have this capability -- we are born with it. We have the ability to fight and see through the broken illusions of the past. We all have the power to stand for the miracle of this moment, knowing that we are born again and again and again every time we do.

Edie has proven this to us. She is one of people I admire most in the world because despite the horrific violation of her youth, she believes in the miracle of her life. She heroically stands for freedom, for forgiveness, for taking all of what happens in life and making it something pure, beautiful and holy. She has gotten the greatest revenge on Hitler and that is by the success of her own life.

On this Valentine's Day weekend, give those around you the greatest piece of chocolate that they will ever taste --- a moment with you when you are living in the miracle. And most importantly, give yourselves the greatest Valentine that you could ever receive -- a moment when you see through the triumphant eyes of pure, unadulterated glory, when you see yourself and your life as it is right now, as the miracle that it is.

Your Valentine's Love Ritual

(1) Make a list of 100 miracles that you have experienced in the last 12 months. Remember, even your breath is a miracle.

(2) Read the list over and over again each day. It will lift you out of the pain of the past and into the glorious present that is now.

(3) If you're with a loved one, write down 20 things you love about them and read it to them.

(4) Have a weekend that rocks, whether you are alone or with someone you love! Celebrate the miracle that you are. Don't buy into any other voice. Just tap into Edie's consciousness and wrap yourself in the love that you deserve.

(5) Join our Love-A-Thon and see how one call can give the miracle of love.

With love and blessings,
Debbie
